What does visitation by petition through a 3rd party mean?

Me and my wife seperated a couple weeks ago. We filed order of protections against each other. The judge awarded her temporary custody of our son, and ordered visitation by petition through 3rd party. I'm trying to understand what that means. Do I have to hire an attorney, file a petition for custody in order to see my son?
