How much financial aid can I expect from FAFSA?

My expected family contribution (EFC) is only about 500. I applied for financial aid a long time ago but didn't realize that I needed to fill out a dependency verification form until recently. Will I still be able to get financial aid? Is financial aid awarded throughout college or only in the very beginning?
